This article looks at the compounding impacts of family violence and homelessness for young children, and the implications for policy and practice. It draws on the Salvation Army's Safe from the Start project in Tasmania, as well as a review of the literature on children, homelessness and domestic and family violence. The Safe from the Start project aimed to identify and form a register of intervention activities and therapeutic play for affected young children aged up to six. An evaluation of that project found that effective early intervention with these children can be conducted by non-specialised workers and parents, given the right training and tools.
